Overview
Ultrasonography (US) is an essential imaging method in investigation of major salivary gland tumors. Diagnostic potential of US equates that of CT or MRI in cases of the superficial lobe parotid tumors, tumors without extraglandular extension and tumors of submandibular and sublingual gland. The deep lobe parotid tumors, tumors with extraglandular extension and tumors of the parapharyngeal or retropharyngeal space are investigated with MRI. Color Doppler ultrasonography uses Doppler effects for the measurement of the blood flow parameters in the tumors supplying vessels. This method improves diagnostic possibilities of ultrasonography. Peripheral vascular resistance decrease and peak systolic velocity increase indicate malignant tumors.
