Overview
Bone vibrator anchored into the skull is presently the most frequent rehabilitation aid in patients with unilateral deafness. Since 2009 the authors rehabilitated 12 patients with unilateral deafness with the BAHA system. The group included 5 patients with congenital deafness, one patient with cochlear form of otosclerosis, one patient after injury causing temporal bone fracture, one patient with deafness resulting from previous surgical treatment of middle ear disease and 4 patients with deafness after translabyrinthine removal of vestibular schwannoma.
The paper evaluates the contribution of the BAHA system in rehabilitation of unilateral deafness by means of the Bern satisfaction questionnaire. The number of points reached in our group was in the range of 29 to 45 points, with the point average of 38 in congenital deafness and 41 points in acquired deafness. The patients evaluated the aid as the least contributing for sound localization and listening to music. Rehabilitation was most favorably appreciated in speech comprehension while talking with a single person. All patients evaluated general contribution of BAHA by a maximum point number.
Key words:
BAHA, unilateral deafness, hearing disorder rehabilitation.
