Overview

Introduction:
The aim of our questionary survey was to evaluate the diagnostic and treatment possibilities of the dysphagic patient present at the ENT departments in the Czech and Slovak republics.

Material and methods:
Ninety one questionaries were sent to 42 ENT departments in Slovakia and 49 ENT departments in the Czech republic. The questions were aimed at the dysphagia presence and particularly at the type of dysphagia present at questioned ENT departments. Other questions dealed with the present diagnostic and treatment possibilities. We evaluated 48 questionaires /27 from Slovak and 21 from the Czech Republic/. We reviewed the questionaires and clarified the present diagnostic and treatment possibilities of dysphagic patient in the Czech and Slovak republics.

Results:
Dysphagic patients are diagnosed at almost all reviewed ENT departments (96.3% in Slovakia, 100% in the Czech republic). Cooperation with the speech pathologist is present in 74% in Slovakia and 71% in the Czech Republic. Nevertheles, the speech pathologist deals with dysphagia just in 22% of departments in Slovakia and 33% in the Czech Republic.

Conclusion:
Diagnostics and treatment of the patient with dysphagia is not systematic in most cases. There is lack of higly specialized centers dealing with dysphagia management.

Key words:
dysphagia, questionaire research, therapeutic modalities.
