Hirudotherapy in Reconstruction Surgery of Head and Neck – Our First Experience

Overview

Use of the medicinal leech is a common treatment of complications in reconstructive and plastic surgery, moreover for salvage of pedicled and free microvascular flaps, used for covering of extensive postoperative defects. Authors present their first experience with leech therapy in patient with complicated healing of lower myocutaneous trapezius muscle flap used in reconstruction of the defect of parotid region of the face after removal of extensive basalioma. Positive effects on a flap healing and encouraging treatment outcomes reviewed in the literature predetermine the use of leeches for complicated flap healing following venous congestion.
