Overview

Metallothionein is a low-weight, intracellular, ubiquitously present protein of a characteristic structure. Its production can be induced by a wide range of physiologic and pathologic impulses. Its role in carcinogenesis has been intensively studied during the past few years. The following communication resumes basic information on its structure and function, and expression in various types of malignant tumors.

Key word:
metallothionein, carcinogenesis, tissue marker, head and neck tumor.
