Case History
Overview
Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a ubiquitous neoplasm, growing in half of cases from serous membranes, mainly from the pleura. Among extrapleural sites, head and neck is relatively frequently afflicted, with largely varying origo making every particular published case rather remarkable. SFT is notorious for troublesome prognostication of its behavior, pleural forms show 10% histological or biological malignancy. Reported mortality greatly varies from 4 % to 50 %. Biologic behavior of SFT in otorhinolaryngological locations, because of the limited number of published cases, is not clear. Complete surgical removal is the mainstay therapy for a SFT. Here we refer our experience with a hypopharyngeal SFT, with only one analogous case having been described so far.
Key words:
solitary fibrous tumor, hypopharynx.
