Overview
Technological progress gradually made it possible to use radiofrequency (RF) surgery in otorhinolaryngology. Electrosurgery was introduced into practice in 1926 by H. Cushing, a neurosurgeon and W. T. Bobek, a physicist. In the subsequent years Harris P. Mosher (1867–1954) used this device on the field of otorhinolaryngology for coagulation of bleeding in the nose. The introduction of RF electrosurgery methods was conditioned by the search of new procedures, which would speed the surgical intervention, decrease perioperative morbidity and improved healing. New electrosurgery devices make it possible. These kinds of instruments were therefore widely applied over the last years in open surgery, endoscopy interventions as well as in robotic surgery. The aim of the article is to draw attention to the historical evolution of RF surgery, technological progress and application of radiofrequency electrosurgery in otorhinolaryngology.
