Overview

Anomalies of the first branchial cleft are a group of inborn developmental defects of external ear which includes aplasias, atresia, stenoses, and external auditory duct duplicates. External auditory canal duplicates, also called cervical aural cysts (fistulas) can be divided in two basic types which differ from each other by histological structure, particularly in relation to the original auditory canal, parotid gland and facial nerve. The incidence of cervical aural fistulas is low and forms only 8% of all branchiogenic inborn developmental defects. An insufficient knowledge of the disease often results in a wrong diagnosis and subsequent therapy as demonstrated in our documentation of five patients hospitalized with this diagnosis at our clinic during a period of four years.
