Overview

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea is a very rare entity. It represents approx. 1% of all respiratory tract malignancies. This tumor is characterized by slow-growth, tendency for local recurrence and late metastasis. Its symptoms result from obstruction of the upper respiratory tract. The tumor in its early stagies is often misdiagnosed as bronchial asthma or chronic bronchitis. The treatment - if feasible - is tracheal resection with reconstruction, often combined with radiotherapy. We present case of a 76-year old male, being seen by lung physician and treated for long lasting dry cough. Later he was sent to an otorhinolaryngologist, where an exophytic tumor partially obstructing trachea was found. CT scans verified tumor of subglottic part of larynx and proximal part of the trachea. Tracheotomy, biopsy and tumor debulking performed followed by primary oncological treatment.
