Overview
We present a study of 335 patients operated on chronic rhinosinusitis with and without nasal polyps at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology F.D. Roosevelt Hospital, Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, within the years 2008–2012. We observed the presence of hyposmia, recurrence of chronic rhinosinusitis after surgical treatment, risk factors (atopy, bronchial asthma, Samter trias), severity of the disease and complication of surgical treatment.
There were significantly higher rates of occurrence of hyposmia (p < 00001), recurrence of the disease after surgery (p = 0.0003), presence of risk factors (p = 0.0124) and more severe form of the disease determined according to preoperative CT investigation of paranasal sinuses (p < 0.0001) in patients with bilateral nasal polyposis compared to patients with chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps.
Severe complications after endoscopic endonasal surgery such as vision deterioration, liquorrhea, brain damage and death were not observed in our study group. There were no significant differences of postoperative complications between study groups with or without occurrence of nasal polyps.
